Benefit for young
girl's lung transplant

ELSANOR, Ala. -- A horse isn't your typical 10-year-old's best friend but Ashleigh Holmes’ horse Reggie is just that to her. Ashleigh has several horses that she calls friends but Reggie is her favorite.

"Cause he's good," said Ashleigh.

For the last couple of weeks Ashleigh has been getting to spend lot of time with her friends but it's not always like this. Ashleigh has Cystic Fibrosis and spends much of her time in the hospital. It's now gotten to the point where she needs help.

"With Cystic Fibrosis what it does is damage their lungs. They get to where they can't breathe and she's about 28 to 30 percent lung functioning," said Melody Holmes, Ashleigh's mom.

Ashleigh needs a lung transplant. It's hard for her to breathe, she can only ride for about 10 minutes at a time, but her mom said it's the only thing on her mind when she gets sick.

"It's something to drive for...you gotta get out of the hospital to get back and ride," said Holmes.

As you've heard horses have helped Ashleigh in so many ways, now they are helping even more by raising money. A benefit rodeo has been set up for this weekend.

The rodeo was set up by the Southern Bulls, Barrels, and Roping Association. It's to help pay for all of the medical bills the Holmes family has and will have in the upcoming months with the transplant.

Ashleigh's mom said the transplant will allow her daughter to be able to fully ride her horses again. She sad it will also keep her daughter around for her. "She makes me happy everyday that I have her…she's just a great kid."

If you would like to help the Holmes family the rodeo will be Saturday 7:00 p.m. at the Pensacola Equestrian Center.
